Abstract

This study was carried out to find out if students’ low library visit in FUPRE is a result of ineffective library orientation and the author proffered suggestions on how the programme can be made more robust to truly impact the students in their library use. The study was guided by three objectives and the survey research design was adopted for the research. The population of the study comprises 1000 registered students out of which 69 were purposely selected as a sample through a convenient sampling technique. The researcher sent out eighty-two(82)questionnaires and sixty-nine(69) were returned. Data was gathered with the use of a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive mean statistics. From the findings of the study, the methods of library orientation need to be more robust and more in tune with current information technology trends. Though the programme is very effective in the impact it has on students, there is a need to improve the methods adopted for the programme. Also, the students admit that the programme is very useful to them. Therefore it can be deduced that the orientation programme is very relevant but there is a need for an upgrade in terms of methods employed to sustain and even improve its relevance to students.
