Abstract

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the 13th of 18 Beatles albums, released in the United States on June 1, 1967, has come to be regarded as one of the seminal artifacts of popular culture of the 20th century. This short paper explores aspects of this music that reached such a broad audience, in particular, some observations of the albums’ astonishing textual and musical diversity as well as less-obvious commonalities that bind the 13 songs with a logic and unity rarely found in popular music.
