Abstract

The duties of the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union Records Committee (NOURC 2010) include:

A. The committee shall publish an official list of the birds of Nebraska.
B. The official list will include all those species whose occurrence has been reported in Nebraska (and approved by the NOURC).
C. The committee shall keep the official list current.
D. The committee shall publish a list of species for which details are requested with every sighting reported.

The 2024 NOURC has completed the above-described duties, and the following is a result of its endeavors.

The “Official List of the Birds of Nebraska” was last published in 2017 (NOURC 2017) and has been appended eight times: (Brogie 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).

The “Official List – 2024” follows the American Ornithologists’ Union Checklist of North American Birds, Seventh Edition (1998) and its subsequent 23 supplements: (current through Chesser et al. 2024).

The last published “Official List” of the NOURC (NOURC 2017) included 462 species. Since then, the following species have been added by NOURC vote: Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Black Phoebe, Great Kiskadee, Broad-billed Hummingbird, Limpkin, Western Bluebird, Western Gull, Pink-footed Goose, Mexican Duck, and Couch’s Kingbird. The Hoary Redpoll and Common Redpoll are now merged. This results in a loss of one species on the list. The “Official List of the Birds of Nebraska: 2024” stands at 471 species.
