Abstract

This presentation was recorded for the course in Publishing in the English Department at the University of Nebraska. The course is led by Dr. Beverly Rilett, affectionately kown to her students as “Doctor Bev.”

The 40-minute presentation covers my personal background in publishing, the legal basis of copyright and the public domain, the history of Congressional actions that produced the present situation, the involvement of Walt Disney and Sonny Bono, and then concludes with remarks and reflections on careers in writing and publishing. Students in the course produce literary anthologies and magazines using public domain sources, so the emphasis here is on where to find and how to use those materials.
