Abstract
In the chapters that follow, the first two set the stage for the Populist movement, dealing with the Great Dakota Boom, the bust that succeeded it, and the growth of the Farmer’s Alliance. The next three chapters recount the course of the populist movement during the 1890s, dealing with its rise, its long years of defeat, and finally fusion and demise. Chapter Six is a study of the administration of South Dakota’s Populist governor, focusing on the barriers to effective reform that he met during his two terms.The final chapter applies some of the techniques used by quantitative historians in an analysis of the reactions of several of the state’s major ethnic groups to the political campaigns of the 1890s.
