Abstract

This study investigated demographic characteristics as determinants of awareness level of e-resources among postgraduate students in public universities in Nigeria. The descriptive survey research method was used for the study. The population of this study comprised 23,070 postgraduate students enrolled in six public universities in southwest Nigeria. A convenience sampling technique was used to select 2,310 postgraduate students in the six public universities. A structured questionnaire was adapted for the study. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, graphs, and chi square to test for relationship. The results showed that the level of awareness of e-resources among the postgraduate students in Nigerian universities is low (52.2%). The results also showed that on the demographic characteristic of gender, no relationship exist between gender and the level of awareness of e-resources (2 =1.979, p>372). While, on the characteristics of place of residence and wealth index, there exists a relationship between place of residence and level of awareness (2=28.348, p>0.000) and also there exist a relationship between wealth index and level of awareness of e-resources (2=13.548, p <0.05) among postgraduate students in Nigerian universities. The study recommends that university authorities and university library managers should improve on awareness sensitization efforts for e-resources and regular and fast internet facility connectivity should be put in place in the university libraries under study to enable postgraduate users to access e-resources more seamlessly for their research and learning.
