Abstract
This paper focuses on the utilization of electronic resources for effective library services in the 21st century. The research paper treated among others, the concept of electronic database, and the various types of databases that are available in the educational system. It also treated the application of electronic resources or databases in rendering effective library services, factors that must be in place in order for electronic databases to be used for library services which includes: library Automation, library Management, library Networking, Audio-visual Technology and technical Communication. The paper outlined some challenges as enshrined by scholars in the field of librarianship. A conclusion was reached stating that the modern day libraries cannot expand if electronic databases and ICT resources are not properly applied to their services. The introduction of new technologies has fundamentally changed the way information professionals’ offer their clients’ services. The latest innovations in the rapidly expanding technology world are digital libraries. The following recommendations were highlighted: University libraries both public and private should ensure that Information and Communication Technologies infrastructure that will aid flawless provision of services by librarians in meeting the information needs of information seekers are adequately supplied; There should be constant power supply so enable internet provision be stable for users to gain accessibility without restriction; The internet bandwidth should be increased to a reasonable level that will enable the users to have full access to full text that they needed to download for use; Both staff and users should be trained and retrained on the acquisition of the necessary knowledge and skills on how to access the database system.
