The New BIA Regulations on Blood Quantum? (7/20/00)

Date of this Version

July 2000

Abstract

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is considering new blood quantum guidelines that could lead to a new definition of who's Indian and who's not. The problem is there's a concern that many Native communities may not have been made aware the proposed rule. Did you hear about it? In this edition of NAC we ask you to share your views on the setting of standards for Native recognition. Also, how does the government determining who's Native and who's not affect tribal sovereignty and the already volatile issue of blood quantum. Guests include Steven Quesenberry of the California Indian Legal Services.
