Abstract

Zuni Salt Lake is a unique resource to the Zuni people as well as the Hopi, Acoma, Laguna, Navajo and Apache tribes. Zuni salt is produced through an ancient process using water from underground. This salt only comes from these aquifers under special conditions. Although they don't oppose mining in general, the Pueblo is fearful that the proposed Fence Lake Coal Mine will cause irreparable damage to this sacred water source and taint the salt minerals. Guests include Zuni Governor Malcolm Bowekety.
