Abstract

An overview of the Pentastomida, a homogeneous and distinctive systematic assemblage of over 130 taxa of worm-like dioecious obligate endoparasitic arthropods that, as adults, inhabit the respiratory tract (bronchi, lungs, and nasal passages) and coelomic cavity of various freshwater and terrestrial vertebrates, with approximately 90% maturing in reptiles. Includes discussion of their fossil record, evolution, geographic range, history of pentastomid research, general morphology, host relationships, larval development, life cycles, ecology, and taxonomy.
