Abstract

El tlacuache es un animal importante en la mitología mesoamericana y se le menciona principalmente al hablar de periodos tardíos. Sin embargo, en el Preclásico, periodo más antiguo de la época prehispánica, y en particular en las colecciones de Tlatilco, el tlacuache está ampliamente representado en la cerámica, por lo que pudo haber tenido un papel relevante dentro del sistema de creencias de estas comunidades tempranas. Es así que surge la pregunta sobre la profundidad temporal de los mitos y religiones que se conocen para las épocas tardías en Mesoamérica, y particularmente si el mito del tlacuache, uno de los más famosos en la época prehispánica, se remonta al Preclásico. A partir de estas preguntas, en el presente artículo se valora la antigüedad de este mito a través del análisis de evidencias tempranas, cuestionando la trascendencia del tlacuache para las sociedades del Preclásico.

The opossum is an important animal in the mythology of Mesoamerica and it is commonly mentioned when referring to its latest periods. Nevertheless, in the Preclassic, the oldest period of the pre-Hispanic era, and particularly in Tlatilco’s collections, the opossum is widely represented in ceramics, so it could have played an important role within the belief system of these early communities. This way the question arises around the temporal depth of the myths and religions that are known for Mesoamerican later times, and particularly if the myth of the opossum, one of the most relevant in pre-Hispanic times, could date back to the Preclassic period. This article takes these questions to value the age of this myth through the analysis of early evidences, questioning the transcendence of the opossum for the societies of the Preclassic.
