Abstract
An overview of ticks (order Ixodida Leach, 1815), blood-feeding ectoparasites of vertebrates representing important vectors of pathogens that cause diseases in humans and other animals. They are obligate parasites at one or more developmental stages and parasitize some terrestrial vertebrates (mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians). Includes discussion of general morphology, biology, life cycles, host range, taxonomic history, current taxonomy, and medical and veterinary significance of both the soft and hard tick groups. Discusses very briefly anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease/Lyme barreliosis, and rickettsiosis.
