How to harness curvature and short-range order for 3D nanomagnetism?
Structural and chemical order of atoms and electron orbitals define magnetic properties of condensed matter. A microscopic magnetization forms as a result of magnetic interactions in long-range-ordered systems. Spin-orbit coupling between adjacent atoms, originating from the hybridization of electron orbitals, causes ferro-, ferri- or antiferromagnetism. Dipole interactions in weak-exchange-coupled materials or between nanostructures may lead to similar configurations at a larger length scale. Magnetic properties and novel functionalities are governed by the curvature and short-range order alongside elements and composition.
Our group seeks to understand the influence of curvature, structural and chemical disorder on 3D nanomagnetism in view of stabilizing non-collinear, topological spin textures, and to identify prospective applications. Our site is https:\\streubel.unl.edu,
